Fitness is usually full of misconceived ideas. To help pull apart some of those misgivings here are some definitions:
Health: a state of complete well-being, and not just the absence of disease or infirmity.
Physical Activity: Bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles; requires expenditure of energy and produces progressive health benefits.
Physical Fitness: the ability to meet the ordinary as well as the unusual demands of daily life safely and effectively without being overly fatigued, and still have energy left for leisure and recreational activities.
Health-Related Fitness: fitness programs that are prescribed to improve the individuals overall health; components include cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition.
Functional Fitness: exercises that train your body for daily tasks. Functional fitness tends to emphasize core stability
Skill– Related Fitness: Fitness components important for success in activities and athletic events requiring high skill levels; encompasses agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time and speed.
As you can see the fitness spectrum varies greatly. It covers everything from the barely active to the athletic individual.
Most of the clients I see are the ones who fall into the functional fitness or health-related fitness categories. People who are looking to better their lives.
The problem with this large spectrum is that you may not know where to start.
